Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) are auto-immune diseases triggered by chronic infections. Exposure to virus, bacteria, fungi, or toxins such as strep, mold, influenza, Lyme and its co-infections can trigger PANDAS/PANS.
HBOT may help by increasing oxygen levels in the blood and tissues, which could potentially enhance the body's healing processes and reduce inflammation. Increased oxygen levels in the blood and tissues can also decrease biofilm, a low oxygen environment that allows anaerobic viruses and bacteria to rapidly multiply. Proponents suggest that HBOT could have a positive impact on symptom severity and frequency.
The International Hyperbarics Association lists these as demonstrated benefits of HBOT for PANS/PANDAS symptoms:
Anti-Inflammatory Effects:
Decrease chronic and acute inflammation
Increase anti-inflammatory cytokines
Reduces Systemic Inflammation
Remediates joint pain
Reduces systemic inflammation in the brain
Effect on Biofilm
Breaks up and kill biofilm
Releases infection from biofilm, making it easier for body and immune system to detect and fight infection
Reduction in anaerobic bacteria load
